“We have to come to terms with the fact that the ability to feel comfortable is itself a privilege” (p.8) This book certainly reached inside my 57 year old white male soul and turned it upside down like a snow globe. Being who I am, I have not had more than a few tastes of “Being the only is lonely and frustrating, and it comes with constant pain.”(p.12) Ms. Jenkins helps me remember that as this book ensnares you with a comfortable writing style; all the while presenting a set of plans to address the mess we’ve allowed. It isn’t going to be cheap. It WILL cause businesses to invest. The Inclusive Organization leads me to the realization that I it’s time we pay in money instead of countless lives and livelihoods. On a few occasions, when Ms. Jenkins had me raising a skeptical eyebrow, she neatly adjusted course; intimating, in fact almost conceding, that not everything had to be done at once. Yet, just as I began to breathe again, she raised the brilliant question - between the lines - of O.K., so what program or what systemically overlooked group of people should be told, in effect, to wait a-gain!? Well done! I read this book today and it’s all marked up and dog eared. As I look back I’ve written “not realistic” twice in the margins only to scratch it out when a solution was offered before the ink had even dried. As the author says so well at the bottom of page 60, “There’s a lot to be done, but it’s not as scary if we do it together.” Time to get to work. 👍🏽

The Inclusive Organization: Real Solutions, Impactful Change, and Meaningful Diversity by Netta Jenkins is a must-read for any leader or employee who is committed to creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace. Jenkins provides a practical and actionable framework for implementing DEI initiatives that will drive real and lasting change. Throughout the book, Jenkins shares stories and examples from her own experiences as a DEI consultant and expert. She also includes worksheets and tools that readers can use to implement DEI initiatives in their own organizations. One of the things that I appreciate most about this book is that it is both practical and inspiring. Jenkins provides clear and concise guidance on how to implement DEI initiatives, but she also does a great job of explaining the why behind DEI and the benefits that it can bring to individuals and organizations alike. If you are serious about creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace, I highly recommend reading The Inclusive Organization: Real Solutions, Impactful Change, and Meaningful Diversity. It is a book that will give you the knowledge, tools, and inspiration you need to make a difference.
